Why the Most Important Part of the Story Is the One You Don’t Want to Face

There is a moment in every case, every story, and every human interaction where everything slows down—and most people misread it. It does not look like progress. It does not feel like clarity. It feels like resistance, confusion, and an uncomfortable awareness that something important is present but not yet accessible. In that moment, most lawyers do what they have been trained to do: they move. They organize, they refine, they sharpen their arguments, and they push forward. On the surface, it looks like discipline. Underneath, it is avoidance.

This is where most stories lose their power. Not in the courtroom. Not in the delivery. Not even in the facts. They lose it in the quiet moment before the story is fully known, when something essential has not yet been faced. The lawyer senses it but cannot name it. The witness feels it but cannot articulate it. The client circles it but cannot yet own it. And instead of staying, they move past it.

What is being avoided in that moment is not weakness. It is not failure. It is the darkness before formation—the part of the story that has not yet taken shape. This is where contradiction lives. This is where emotion is unorganized. This is where truth exists without language. And because it is unformed, it feels dangerous. The instinct is to replace it with something structured, something clear, something that feels complete. But nothing meaningful is ever created that way.

Moreno understood this long before most of us had language for it. He did not describe darkness as something to eliminate, but as something embedded in the sequence of human action. Before spontaneity, before creativity, there is always a phase where the system has not yet organized itself. That phase is uncomfortable, unstable, and necessary. It is where the next accurate response is forming.

In BTC, this matters because story is identity under pressure. And identity does not emerge from what is already known. It emerges from what has not yet been integrated. If you bypass that moment, you do not get a stronger story. You get a safer one. And safe stories do not move juries. They do not hold weight. They do not change outcomes.
